How Komatsu Replaced Spreadsheets and Paper with Real-Time Training Visibility

Komatsu is the world’s second-largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, operating across more than 140 countries. The Australian operation manages technical, operational, and central control training for around 300 learners, previously across pen and paper, SharePoint, and Excel. Cloud Assess replaced that fragmented approach with a single platform, cutting admin, transforming assessment turnaround times, and giving leadership real-time visibility across all three training streams.

From paper to powerful

Pen, paper, and spreadsheets creating havoc

Before Cloud Assess, Komatsu’s training team was held together by manual processes that simply couldn’t keep pace with the complexity of managing three distinct training streams across a growing workforce. Competency records lived in Excel, content sat in SharePoint, and accuracy depended entirely on every individual doing their part correctly. When something went wrong, tracking down what happened, who taught it, and whether paperwork had been completed meant hours of digging through files. The team was spending weeks editing PowerPoints and getting bogged down in material development, leaving little time for actual training delivery.

No central visibility for managers or leadership

Cloud Assess replaced Komatsu’s fragmented system with a single platform covering technical, operational, and central control training for around 300 learners. Managers were given admin access to run and customise their own reports, removing the constant back-and-forth with the training team. Short training sessions were run to get managers comfortable with the platform, gradually shifting day-to-day oversight to the people closest to the work. The Cloud Assess support team, were credited as a key reason adoption ran smoothly, responding to even complex requests with care and consistency.

Less admin, faster assessments, leadership finally in the loop

With Cloud Assess in place, Komatsu’s training team has seen a significant reduction in administrative workload and a complete change in assessment turnaround times. Managers can now book learners into courses and pull their own reports without involving the training team, freeing up Phil and his colleagues to focus on delivery. Leadership has real-time visibility on where learners are at across all three training streams, something that simply wasn’t possible before. Even learners have noticed the difference, consistently feeding back that completing training on the platform is a better experience than pen and paper.

From spreadsheets and SharePoint to real-time training visibility

Komatsu replaced pen, paper, and disconnected spreadsheets with a single Cloud Assess platform, cutting admin, transforming assessment turnaround times, and giving leadership instant visibility across 300 learners and three training streams.
