Course Overview

Running Records are one of the most detailed observation methods educators use — like a movie script that captures a child’s actions, words, and emotions in the moment. This course will guide you through how to write accurate, objective running records that bring children’s learning to life. You’ll learn when to use them, how to record in detail, and how to interpret the information to plan for children’s future development.

By the end of this course, you will:

  • Understand what a Running Record is and its purpose in early childhood practice.
  • Learn how to write detailed, objective, present-tense observations.
  • Practise capturing fine motor, gross motor, cognitive, emotional, language, and social development.
  • Recognise when Running Records are most useful (e.g., focusing on a specific skill or area of development).
  • Explore the advantages and limitations of using Running Records.
  • Use observations to analyse development, link to EYLF outcomes, and plan meaningful future experiences.

This course will equip you with the confidence to observe with precision, document children’s development accurately, and use running records as a powerful tool for curriculum planning and professional practice.
