What You’ll Learn

  • Build secure attachments with responsive, warm interactions and consistent routines.
  • Use emotion coaching: label feelings, co-regulate, and model healthy expression.
  • Strengthen self-concept and self-esteem through choice, success, and strengths-based feedback.
  • Foster autonomy and decision-making with realistic, safe choices across the day.
  • Teach empathy and pro-social skills with books, picture talks, and guided practice.
  • Support resilience and a growth mindset: normalize mistakes, plan next steps, and persist.
  • Apply key theories (Erikson, Bowlby/Ainsworth, Maslow, Bandura, Gardner) in simple, practical ways.
  • Use routines (feeding, toileting, sleep, nappy changes) as one-on-one relationship builders.
  • Partner with families to promote consistent language and strategies across home and service.

Course Overview

This course helps educators nurture children’s emotional wellbeing through building secure relationships, resilience, self-identity, empathy, and agency.

Grounded in EYLF Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity (with links to Outcome 2), you’ll turn everyday routines and play into powerful moments for naming feelings, co-regulating, problem solving, and celebrating children’s strengths. You’ll leave with practical language, routines, and strategies that promote positive mental health and pro-social behaviour now and for life.

This course is part of our Child Development 101 series.

We hope you enjoy.
