What You’ll Learn

  • How to distinguish between the effects of disease and the individual, enabling you to treat every client with dignity and respect
  • How to empower clients for participation in assessment and planning by assisting them to understand the impacts on cognition of lifestyle choices, medications, and comorbidities
  • How to provide the most appropriate personal and clinical care, minimising risks
  • To be knowledgeable, trained and equipped for assisting people living with dementia

Course Overview

This training introduces you to the impact of dementia, the social model of dementia, and how to provide person-centred support. It focuses on seeing the individual first, not just the condition, and highlights the importance of treating every person with dignity and respect. The course supports workers to deliver support that values each person’s identity, choices and wellbeing.

By the end of this training, you will understand how dementia affects people and how person-centred support can improve their quality of life. You will be able to support clients to take part in assessment and planning by helping them understand how lifestyle, medications and health conditions can affect memory and thinking. You will also be able to provide safe, appropriate support that reduces risks related to nutrition, infections and medications.

This training will give you the knowledge and confidence to support people living with dementia in line with the Aged Care Quality Standards.
