Diversity and inclusion (often abbreviated as D&I) are two related but distinct concepts that focus on promoting and respecting differences among individuals and creating environments where everyone is valued and has equal opportunities.

What’s the difference? Diversity refers to the wide variety of characteristics, backgrounds, and experiences that individuals may have. These characteristics include but are not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, religion, physical and mental abilities, socioeconomic status, educational background, and more.

Inclusion is the practice of creating an environment or culture where all individuals, regardless of their diverse backgrounds and characteristics, feel welcome, respected, and fully engaged. It goes beyond mere tolerance and aims for active participation and a sense of belonging.

Respecting diversity helps address inequalities that may exist in the childcare system. This, in turn, ensures that all children, regardless of their socio-economic status, ethnicity, or abilities, have access to the same opportunities and support, promoting inclusivity and a fair and just society.
