I’ve got really strong views on this. It comes down to “trust no one”. Many times I go in to do an audit or review and people think everything is going smoothly because they have others handling tasks, but there is often a lack of understanding or communication. What is actually being done is not what was intended, so there is a clear gap.
You also need very clear communication, and it must flow both up and down the chain so that everyone is aligned on what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, and, most importantly, why it needs to be done. Simply telling someone to do something is not enough. If they understand the implications of not doing it, they are far more likely to follow through properly.
Key Points
- Trust but verify: Never assume tasks are being done correctly—always check and audit to ensure compliance.
- Clear communication is essential: Instructions must be communicated up and down the chain so everyone understands what needs to be done.
- Explain the “why”: People are more likely to follow through on tasks when they understand the consequences of not completing them.
