How Hanwha Defence maps 600 processes to 20 skills

Hanwha Defence Australia builds armoured vehicles for the Australian Army at its Avalon manufacturing hub. As headcount tripled to nearly 600, the L&D team needed a system that could keep pace with growth and evidence competency quickly. With Cloud Assess, Hanwha grouped 600 production processes into 20 transferable core skills, giving managers real-time visibility of skills and gaps by station.

From paper to powerful

Rapid growth that outpaced manual competency systems

Hanwha’s workforce tripled to nearly 600 in two years as it ramped up production of armoured vehicles for the Australian Army. Training records sat in an HR system that wasn’t designed for learning, with assessments managed through logbooks, PDF forms and SharePoint. Working in a high-risk industry, the L&D team recognised early that they needed a faster, more scalable way to evidence competency as the business grew. They also wanted to give managers visibility of their teams’ training without opening up sensitive HR data.

600 processes grouped into 20 transferable core skills

After building the case for a purpose-built LMS and clearing security sign-off, Hanwha went live on Cloud Assess within a few months, timing the launch around a major SAP rollout. The team grouped the 600 individual processes on the Huntsman line into 20 core skills mapped to production stations, each assessed once through a standard competency assessment. Team leaders then sign off supervised tasks, with paper logbooks moving to quick mobile sign-off. A phased pilot, assessor training and a top-down approach with managers brought the frontline on board.

Skills that move with workers across stations and vehicles

Once competent in a core skill, workers carry it across all eight Huntsman stations and only learn station-specific processes, cutting assessor time and man-hours. The same core skills will transfer to the Redback production line from early 2027, so workers won’t need to repeat a full assessment. Managers now have a single source of truth showing skills and gaps by station, allocating jobs based on verified qualifications, permits and licences. With all learning and development moving into Cloud Assess by early 2027, Hanwha is now exploring using the platform to prove soldier competency to the Australian Army.
